GETTING INVOLVED

Often one wants to show off and share your passion for the Scottish Terrier. To that end there are numerous opportunities from conformation and performance events, to volunteering to do therapy work or just sharing the knowledge you’ve gained from the experiences you’ve had with your dog. Getting involved is a great way to spend quality time with your Scottie and the people that love them.

CONFORMATION

Conformation is the oldest form of competition and has been the mainstay of AKC competition. It is really a team event. The dog and its handler work as a team in the ring. Grooming, presentation and quality of the dog are key to success in the show ring. Each dog is shown to a judge who evaluates the dog and compares the dog’s attributes and spirit to the official standard for the breed as adopted by the Scottish Terrier Club of America and approved by the American Kennel Club. COMPANION & PERFORMANCE SPORTS

Scotties are successful at competing in a wide range of companion and performance sports. Companion sports, such as agility, obedience, and Rally, demonstrate the special bond that exists between a well-trained Scottie and its owner. Performance sports, such as earthdog and scent work, tap into the innate skills of our Scotties as a hunting companion. When a Scottie team succeeds in a performance sport, they confirm our Scotties’ ability to perform the practical functions that they were bred to do. LEARN MORE…

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP

The American Kennel club (AKC) offers classes to evaluate the abilities of the young handler. Unlike the typical conformation classes, the presenter is being directly evaluated to determine how well he/she is showing the dog. Junior Showmanship is open to children between the age of 9 and 18. It presents a great way for a young person to learn about dog shows and how to handle dogs. LEARN MORE…
