The purpose of the Top Twenty event is to showcase the top Scottish Terrier winners determined by “Breed, Group, NOH, and Lloyd Points” earned the previous year. To that end, this procedure is written to exhibit each dog, individually for evaluation. These dogs are deserving of their exclusive recognition.
The dogs are selected by the top 20 standings for Lloyd Award, Best of Breed, National Owners Handlers Series, and Overall points for the previous year. The top 20 does not require that the dog be owned by a member of the STCA. In addition, the top 10 overall champions in Canada are eligible. Obviously some dogs will qualify in multiple categories.
One half hour prior to the start of the judging, a Top Twenty Competition Committee person(s)will convene a required handler’s meeting and distribute arm bands to all participants. Arm band numbers shall match the catalog page number of the entered dog’s photo. Catalog ad placement and therefore arm band numbers will be assigned based on the order in which the entries are received by the Chairperson(s) with all the males being judged first followed by all the bitches. This information along with the order of judging will be provided, in advance, to the owner(s) and, if possible, the handler of each dog. A chart listing this information will be posted in the handler’s area and ringside prior to the start of judging. It is imperative that the ringside chart be removed prior to the judges entering the room.
Approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of judging, the Committee Chairperson(s) will have a meeting with the judges. At that time, the judging procedure will be reviewed and the protocol of judging the dogs per the AKC Standard for the Scottish Terrier will be stressed – the entrants are not to be judged against each other. Additionally, the judges will be reminded not to discuss the dogs with fellow judges or stewards. Should a procedural question arise, the judgeshould direct his/her question either to the Master of Ceremonies or the Committee Chairperson(s) directly or through their steward. Any impression of collusion between the 3 judges must be avoided.
A rosette, medallion or trophy table may be set up alongside the ring, if space allows. There may be a special, ring-side section reserved for the owners and breeders of all the Top-20 Competition dogs. In addition, each entry will receive two admission tickets as well as 2 tickets for the reserved seating section.
There will be a public-address system and a Master of Ceremonies. Each judge will be formally introduced to the ringside spectators by the Master of Ceremonies. The 3 ring stewards will be introduced in the same manner.
After introductions, the Master of Ceremonies will call in the entire group of Top Twenty competitors in arm band number order. The dogs will circle the ring, twice, and then leave the ring. Because the venue changes each year and the size of the ring may vary, there may be the need to split the dogs into two groups for this first viewing.
After all dogs are viewed in the ring as a group, each dog will be judged individually.
The Master of Ceremonies will call the first dog into the ring. It will move around the ring once and then pose in the center for its “Overall Impression.” Each judge will begin by scoring the dog on “Overall Impression”, before formally judging the dog. By using an Overall Impression Scale of 1 through 10, the judge must look at the dog and place the dog on the scale with a score of 10 being the highest - - meaning that any dog rated a 10 most closely matches the judge’s picture of the ideal Scottish Terrier per the written AKC standard This “Overall Impression” score will be used ONLY in case of tie points from the in-depth evaluations of the dogs.
The dog will then be gaited down and back, twice, while the three judges as a group observe the movement. The judges will then score the dog for movement. There shall be no discussion.
In case a judge’s view was blocked during the previous 2 movements, judge(s) have the option of requesting a third down and back.
Upon completion of the down and back gaiting, Dog #1 will be presented for a hands-on evaluation on the table. Judge #1 will have the opportunity to examine the dog as he/she sees fit. Upon completion of this appraisal, Dog #1 will be evaluated by Judge #2 and then Judge #3. The dog will then circle the ring and exit.
Immediately following the completion of judging each dog, the judge must complete his/her score sheet for that dog, sign, BUT NOT tally the sheet, and place it in the provided envelope. This procedure (#1 through #4) will be repeated until all dogs have been judged and scored
Once the score sheet is placed in the envelope, it is not to be changed or viewed again. After all dogs have been judged and the scores sheets completed, the envelope shall be sealed and the stewards will immediately turn them over to the Committee Chairperson(s).
After the last dog has been examined by Judge #3, the Master of Ceremonies will make a last call for People’s Choice ballots to be placed in the ballot box which will be closed following the completion of judging. Any person buying a catalog or attending the dinner has the right to receive one vote for a Top 20 People’s Choice Award. Therefore, there is a maximum of two votes per person.
After the last dog has been judged, each entrant will be called into the ring, one at a time, starting with the first dog in the catalog. The Master of Ceremonies will announce the dog’s registered name, call name, owner(s) of record, and breeder(s) of record, and the dog shall gait once around the ring and exit. The dog’s accomplishments will also be announced on this last co-round. The dog’s song of choice will also be played. As the dog exits the ring, a presentation of a rosette or medallion will be made. The next dog in the catalog will be called into the ring and the procedure will be repeated until all the entries are individually introduced by the Master of Ceremonies.
The People’s Choice ballots are tabulated immediately following the judging. The Top-20 Committee will select an auditor who must not have any ties to any of the entries, nor to the judges to count the ballots. After the tabulation is complete and all dogs have been individually presented in catalog order, all dogs will come back into the ring in catalog order. Then the name of the People’s Choice winner will be announced. The Judges shall present the winner with its prizes.
In the event of a tie, duplicate prizes will be award.
All Judges must remain after judging for photo ops.
The Auditor will tally the scores for each dog. Given that there is a maximum score of 120 points, the highest total score that can be received is 360 points. The result will be kept secret. Only the name the winning dog will be announced. The Top Twenty judges, are encouraged to write a brief synopsis of their judging experience for insertion into an article for the Bagpiper or as a STCA news alert.
Each score sheet for each dog from the three judges will be tabulated by the auditor. The scores will then be added together and the dog with the highest overall score will be declared thewinner.
In the event of a tie, the Counting Committee will determine the winner by adding the judges’ “Overall Impression” score (refer to #1 under Judging Procedure) to the dogs’ tie score and the highest resulting score is the winner. If the dogs’ scores remain a tie, then there shall be Co- winners for that year.
After all Top 20 competitors are viewed in the ring as a group, each dog will be judged individually. Each dog, as determined in exhibition order assigned by the Top 20 Coordinator, will enter the ring and pose for "First Impression." Judges assign a score of 1-10 (10 being the highest). This first impression score will be used only to break a tie in total points assigned to two dogs. points using the breed standard. The dog is then moved down and back, and in a circle while all three judges watch. The dog will then be examined and scored completely by the three judges, each judge touching and examining the dog as he/she sees fit. The dog will then circle the ring and exit. This process will be repeated until all dogs have been scored.
All dogs will be scored by each judge using the scale of points as provided in the AKC approved standard for the Scottish Terrier. The scoring sheet has been modified to include movement and attitude.
Immediately following the completion of judging, the judges marked (but not tallied for total scores) sheets will be turned over to an independent and impartial auditor to be tabulated. The scores for each dog, from each of the three judges, are added together to determine the dog's overall score.
The winner will be determined based on the total score of each dog. The score sheets and the identity of the winning dog will be given to the Top 20 Chairperson on the evening of the STCA Awards Banquet following the Rotating National Specialty.
In the event of a tie, the winner is determined by consulting the First Impression total. The dog with the highest First Impression total is declared the winner. The First Impression score is used ONLY to break a tie, and is not included in tabulating the average score.
